Formerly this land was stewarded by the Nisenan Tribe for thousands of years in relationship to fire ecology. We acknowledge the Nisenan people are still here among us today, though they are nearly invisible and their story continues to be excluded from history. We understand we are on Nisenan land that was never ceded and the original tribal families have yet to recover from the near genocide of their people. As a resident or visitor in Nisenan land, we support the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan tribe in efforts to stabilize their people as well as the campaign to restore tribal sovereignty through federal recognition.
With the gold rush, European-Americans captalists attempted the first hydralic mining site in the world on our site. Thousands of cubic yards of topsoil, subsoil, and more were washed off the hillside in a fury for gold. No gold was ever found on site. We have worked to restore the soil, and aim to restore natural habitat w/ an awareness for fire safety and ecology.
Our 11 acre plot includes 5 acres for built homes, structures, paths, and gardens. We preserved 6 acres of open space with mature pine and oaks trees, manzanita, stone labyrinth, a larger production garden, and walking trails to historic downtown Nevada City. Some of our landscape is edible or medicinal, implementing permaculture principles.
Manzanita Garden provides food, beauty, soil restoration, and community by getting our hands in the soil.
